SanDisk Extreme II RAID 0 (3) Drive Array SSD Review
Article Publish Date:
Having migrated over to and run Haswell for a while now we know that the sweet spot for storage performance with Haswell is a 3 drive array in RAID 0. If you are a performance junkie like we are then you must have Haswell and you must have a (3) drive array in RAID 0. Yes you can run more than 3 drives in RAID 0 (up to 6 drives) natively with Haswell’s Intel SATA III Ports but because of bandwidth limitations more than 3 drives doesn’t really give much of a return. Don’t get us wrong we really love the idea of running a 6 drive array and it would have better performance than a 3 drive array but not very much more so, we believe a 3 drive array is the sweet spot for most enthusiasts.
As it stands today; if you are going to have a badass rig then you must begin with storage and your storage medium must be solid state. Anything less means you just think your rig is good but, actually it sucks. With this in mind let’s see what kind of storage performance you can expect from a 3 drive SSD array in RAID 0 running on a Z87 Platform. We briefly tested Haswell’s RAID performance with arrays of 2 to 5 drives in our Haswell Storage review that can be found HERE. That was abbreviated testing and this will be our first 3 drive array fully scrutinized utilizing our complete battery of testing.
For this inaugural 3 drive RAID 0 review we wanted to choose some damn good drives. Newly launched top tier drives packed with the latest in technology would be appropriate; so we chose SanDisk’s brand new Extreme II 240GB SSD x 3. Our single drive REVIEW showed that the Extreme II is one hell of a drive so we naturally want to see what 3 of these awesome drives look like in RAID 0 RWLabs.com style.
What we have for you today is 3 of the best drives on the market, running in RAID 0 maxed out on a new Haswell platform so this going to be good! Where else can you get this kind of a review? That’s right NO where else.
We will begin where we always begin and that’s by seeing what SanDisk has to say about their awesome new Extreme II SSD:
