    Inside 2010 and 2011 alone several manufacturers have introduced more fan controllers than ever before in the history of personal computers and i don't really think that's a coincidence especially since most mid to high end PC Cases nowadays come with at least 3 preinstalled fans while most of them have room for up to 6 fans, regardless of size.
