INTRODUCTION

 

 

 

 

    With less than two months before AMD releases their next generation of graphics cards (Radeon HD 7000) we decided to take a look at something quite special, features wise. Now as most of you know up until this day it's somewhat impossible to use a Radeon card as primary and a GeForce card as secondary for PhysX and Cuda use. Some hacks/mods made by Radeon users have been around for a while now but the actual success rate of such software solutions is very small. HIS decided to provide a working solution to all of their fans by introducing the latest Radeon HD 6970 IceQ MIX edition which allows you to use a GeForce card as secondary in order to enjoy PhysX compatible games and Cuda compatible applications at their fullest.

    To allow such compatibility between Radeon and GeForce cards HIS surprisingly used the latest Lucid Hydra chip which is not something we have ever seen before with similar cards and as such especially since the Hydra requires game profiles and driver optimizations for games to work it may not be compatible with every title out there. However although the ability to use a GeForce card for PhysX and Cuda is the strong selling point of the HIS Radeon HD 6970 IceQ MIX the card also features a very quiet cooling solution which also manages to keep the cards temperatures quite lower than most Radeon HD 6970's we've seen. The downside however is that this particular card by HIS comes with default Radeon HD 6970 clocks and is not overclocked as their TurboX line of cards. Needless to say you can overclock the card yourself but aside the fact that it's not very easy for inexperienced users HIS is mainly famous for their great factory overclocked Radeon HD cards and so we were quite surprised to see default Radeon HD 6970 clocks with the only MIX card in their product line.
