INTRODUCTION

Today’s review is quite special for all of us here at RWL since it actually marks our 500th review/roundup, a number which automatically places us amongst the quite few similar sites with over 700 technology products reviewed up until today. Because of that i decided to spend the last 7 days in order to bring a thorough test of a special and quite useful device which as the review title clearly states is the latest Plextor PX-LB950SA Blu-Ray writer. I was going to have our SSD comparison as the 500th review/roundup but we had to delay it for a few days in order for extra drives to arrive in time.
The PLEXTOR brand name was created in United Stated in 1993, and comes from two parts: PLEX and TOR. “PLEX” originated from the suffix of “multiplex”. Here, “multiplex” means relating to a system of transmitting several messages or signals simultaneously on the same circuit or channel, just as making silk which is being composed of many materials and needed a precise and delicate process. “TOR” originated from motor, which is the first product with Shinano Kenshi’s core technologies in electric industry. The following characteristics describe the identity of the PLEXTOR brand: Reliable, Relentless, Professional, Diligent, Pioneering, Excellent.
If you've been around computers as long as i have (and you haven't been living beneath a rock for the past 20 years) then you are definitely aware of Plextor and their magnificent optical drives (ATA,SCSI,SATA) which actually took the market by storm back in the 90's. You see back then there was simply nothing better than a Plextor optical drive and that was something which virtually everyone knew. Unfortunately since you always get what you pay for Plextor products were quite expensive and so with regular users turning to cheaper optical drives they had to make some compromises during the past 10 years in order to make their products more affordable. In the end Plextor did manage to do exactly that and is now only slightly more expensive than similar products. Still Plextor has maintained the same unique product support level and is also offering their famous Fast Warranty Service which guarantees you will have a new replacement drive delivered at your location within 2 days. But let’s see how well it does when it comes to both reading and writing discs.
