INTRODUCTION

In anticipation (still) for the arrival of the upcoming quad channel capable motherboards based on the latest X79 chipset by Intel which should finally launch in around 5 months we are still focused on the next best thing which is of course triple channel memory kits for the Intel X58 based mainboards. Inside June we had the chance to thoroughly test the fastest 12GB 1600MHz kit in the market made by GSkill (Sniper) and an mid-level 6GB 1600MHz kit by Patriot (Viper Xtreme) and so since lately people seem to prefer such solutions after many email requests today we will be taking a look at the latest Ballistix Sport DDR3 1600MHz 12GB CL10 memory kit by Crucial (Lexar Media).

The first thing most people will notice with the Ballistix Sport kit is the CL10 (CAS latency) which is set rather high so most of you will think that these memory modules have no room for overclocking. However after taking a closer look you will also notice that this kit works with just 1.5v as opposed to most Triple Channel kits that use 1.65v so that automatically means that you can push the voltage even higher to get better results. Personally i was able to go as high as 1800MHz CL10@ 1.66v which is not bad at all for a low-cost entry-level triple channel kit. But let’s continue and see exactly what this kit is capable of.
