INTRODUCTION

With NAS (Network Attached Storage) drives becoming more and more popular everyday it's only natural for us to also focus on that segment of the market. Of course the really good NAS devices cost quite a lot more than what a casual user would ever spend but for those that can afford them they are worth every last penny. Today’s review is focused on a 2-bay NAS device made by the well-respected Synology and more specifically the award winning Disk Station DS211.

Founded in 2000, Synology is a young and energetic company dedicated to developing high-performance, reliable, versatile, and environmentally-friendly Network Attached Storage (NAS) products. Our goal is to deliver user-friendly solutions and solid customer service to satisfy the needs of businesses, home offices, individual users and families.

Synology currently has 3 more 2-bay NAS units in their line including the DS211+, DS211j and DS710+. Of course as the names suggest the DS211+ is a slightly improved version of the DS211 we have here with us, the DS211j is a slightly cut down version of the DS211 while the DS710+ is the larger brother and so it belongs in an entirely different league than the rest. Now unfortunately it took us quite a long time to finish testing the unit prior to releasing our review mainly because we did happen to come across some slight speed issues which of course were resolved quickly with new firmware updates. That aside the DiskStation DS211 offers just about everything one could ever ask for from a NAS unit and hopefully we have all of them covered in this review.
