Introduction

 

Searching retailers for a quality aftermarket cooler is a daunting task these days. There is a vast selection of them on the market. For some time now within the PC tech community, the buzz on coolers has been directed at heat-pipe coolers as being the way to go when buying an aftermarket cooler. The coolers work on the principle of the heat-pipes removing heat from the puck of the cooler to the thin copper or aluminum fins to increase the coolers efficiency in removing heat. They took the market by storm, and they were what all the best systems were using for air cooling.

Well Xigmatek decided to up the ante by having their heat-pipes exposed to the processors, unlike other coolers that have the pipes wrapped on both sides by thick metal. They have pioneered this field of coolers with their Heat-pipe Direct Touch (HDT) design, where their 8mm heat-pipes are exposed to the processors Interagted Heat Spreader(IHS).  Xigmatek was nice enough to let me also test its bretheren, the HDT-1283, and their bigger brother the HDT-1284. I will be showing those two soon, and comparing them in later reviews.

This example from Xigmatek is their Red Scorpion-S1283. With its 3 exposed, nickel plated heat-pipes, white LED, orange bladed fan, and aluminum fins, this cooler is a real looker. Let’s get passed the sheer “looks” factor and see how this cooler stands up!
