INTRODUCTION

Security measures in a computer up until recently have been quite easy to brake from the all known startup ( Bios ) password up to the windows logon password. Certain companies knowing this to be true started making quite a few radical security methods from USB dongles which you had to plug into a computer to start using it and third party windows logon programs. Still most of them proved not to be practical or safe enough and so in the three last years many companies decided to research ways to make the once sci-fi to us fingerprint sensor an affordable reality for modern systems and they succeeded.

UPEK was founded back in 1996 near Berkeley, California and since then they have grown to be the global leader in biometric fingerprint security solutions with offices in Prague, Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo. Currently they offer integrated end-to-end solutions including comprehensive design & integration services to the world’s leading consumer and industrial products companies. UPEK solutions not only enable the strongest fingerprint authentication security available and effortless user convenience but they are also easy to deploy and integrate with existing infrastructure and network architectures. UPEK biometric security products enable a wide range of applications including password replacement for PCs and applications, centralized management for corporate network security, secure mobile transactions, protection of portable data, identity verification for government and military applications, and physical access control.

The UPEK Eikon fingerprint sensor solution is ideal for the end user, you and me, mainly because of its extremely low cost. The Eikon is a very small device which you attach in one of your USB sockets and place on your desk, preferably in a good and easy to reach spot. Although i would like it better if you could use it to turn on your system this isn’t the case and so the Eikon can replace or coexist with your windows logon password and it can also be used every time you want to start a program within the windows operating system.
