INTRODUCTION

With popularity of NAS (Network Attached Storage) units reaching an all-time high lately it was only natural for us to switch gears and increase the frequency of such reviews so to that end during the past month quite a few of the latest models to hit the market have reached and knocked on our door. Almost a week ago we tested the latest mid-end NAS unit by QNAP, the excellent TurboNAS TS-219P II which managed to surpass its predecessor with quite ease, at least in terms of performance. However since many people out there are looking to buy a cost-effective NAS unit and are not willing to spend the extra premium for what that particular model offers today we will be taking a look at the latest entry-level unit by Synology, the DiskStation DS212j.
Founded in 2000, Synology is a young and energetic company dedicated to developing high-performance, reliable, versatile, and environmentally-friendly Network Attached Storage (NAS) products. Our goal is to deliver user-friendly solutions and solid customer service to satisfy the needs of businesses, home offices, individual users and families.
Much like the DS211 line there are also three available models in the DS212 line, the home and small office targeted entry level DS212j (1.2GHz/256MB DDR2) we have here with us today, the home to business workgroup oriented mid-end DS212 (1.6GHz/256MB DDR3) and the high-end DS212+ (2GHz/512MB DDR3) aimed at small to medium business users. Overall the new DS212 models are very similar to the 2011 DS211 models (specifications wise) so having already tested the DS211 almost a year ago we more or less know what range of performance and features to expect from the latest DiskStation DS212j. However there's quite a long distance from theory to real world use so follow us in to see whether or not the latest DiskStation DS212j is really amongst the best entry level NAS units in the market today.
