INTRODUCTION

Although it has taken quite a while for hard disk drives to finally reach capacities of up to 3TB companies have begun to roll out various models with different performance levels for both consumer and enterprise usage. Hitachi GST was amongst the very first to release a 3TB drive and right now their 3TB line includes the both the consumer oriented DeskStar 5K3000/7K3000 and the enterprise UltraStar 7K3000 models. Today with us we have their DeskStar 7K3000 model which we will be testing in both single and Raid0 modes to get a glimpse in its performance.
Hitachi GST was formed in 2003 from the strategic merger of the storage technology businesses within IBM Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. Since that time, the company has built on the heritage of both industry pioneers to grow profitably as a major contributor in the global storage industry. The company has worked to bring a customer-focused and full-service approach to its storage solutions. In doing so, the company has set a high standard for product and service excellence with world-class operations, substantial technical knowledge and a comprehensive customer support infrastructure.
Although the DeskStar 7K3000 sports a the usual speed of 7200RPM found in most 3.5'' drives it does come with a nice number of features such as the latest SATA III 6Gb/s interface, 64MB of Data Buffer, an MTBF of almost 2 million hours ( The UltraStar 7K3000 model has 2 million hours MTBF) and a 3 year warranty. In terms of speed the DeskStar 7K3000 achieves nice performance numbers, however its 7200RPM make it impossible for it to match the performance of SAS drives. Still when tested in Raid0 mode with yet another DeskStar 7K3000 their performance easily surpasses even the fastest SAS drive in the market today.
