Introduction

When I started over clocking it was on a DFI, socket 939, with a stock AMD aluminum cooler. Trying to keep that CPU under 55° centigrade was the magic number. I don’t have to tell you that I didn’t get very far before I reached that threshold. I was lucky enough to then gotten a hold of an Opteron170, with its stock heat-pipe cooler. That cooler was doing me just fine for a while. Then after a bit of reading I found out what the new CPU was capable of. That cooler wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to be either.

So off I went to forums asking opinions of coolers at the time. Hands down, the Zalman CNPS 9500/9700’s came most recommended. Off to Newegg to buy one, I went. I had really good results, but it seemed to get saturated with heat at higher voltages. Still not satisfied, I looked into water cooling. With some time and patience I bought used parts to ease the expense a bit. After a bit of fiddling with the set up and swapping out parts as I could afford them, that got my processor to the 3.0GHz mark I was striving for. Since then, I have had a few different builds, and the water cooling kit has transferred over well.

Lately, though, I have noticed by comparing temperatures to other similar computers, the water cooling isn’t as far ahead of the air cooling market as it once was. With a lot of time passing since I started in cooling to achieve the best temperatures, things in the air cooling market have drastically changed. With more efficient fans, and choices galore, to be a success in this market you have to step aside for a moment and think outside the box. Xigmatek has done just this, with their HDT or Heat-pipe Direct Touch line of air cooling. They were nice enough to send me the HDT-S1284 to review. At first glance this cooler has a lot of appeal, with its four 8mm heat-pipes and different design of the fins. Let’s see what the HDT-S1284 brings to the table.
