Introduction

Digital files are everywhere and more are on the way. For most users keeping control of their digital music, pictures, movies, videos and data is as simple as keeping them in My Documents or on a spare hard drive. Most users give little thought of protection until it is too late and disaster has struck. At that point a moment of realization occurs, why didn’t I back that up.

From personal experience, I can tell you that data loss is a terrible thing. Last year I lost a drive on a NAS Server, an Anthology Solutions Yellow Machine, and I was sure I set the system up for RAID 5 after I finished testing it for an article years before. To my surprise, I went in through the software to find that the NAS was never converted to RAID 5 but was still set for RAID 0, as in zero redundancy, zero protection. In all honesty, if it were most of the files I keep, the emotional impact would not be that bad but these were not my files but the equivalent to an in house nuclear meltdown, these were my wife and family files. Pictures of the boys, family, taxes, most of the stuff that you would never want to lose and the feeling is that of a family that lost their heirlooms in a house fire.
