Noctua is a highly regarded brand in the overclocking community and they have been ever since the release of the NH-D14 heatsink. The D14 pushed the limits of what an air-cooled heatsink could be, but it did have compatibility issues with larger memory modules, such as the Corsair Dominators. The newest line of heatsinks designed by Noctua; the “S” series, addresses the memory compatibly issue, by giving the heatsinks a slimmer frame. This guarantees full compatibility with tall memory modules on most LGA115x and AMD motherboards. The heatsinks is also tailor made for the LGA-2011 socket meaning even more memory will be supported on that platform.
Even though these coolers are thinner they utilize Noctua’s classic U-series single tower CPU cooler design, meaning they don’t sacrifice any performance in their quest to accommodate a wider array of memory.
In total there are two coolers in the “S” comes two heatsinks; the NH-U14S and the NH-U12S. The NH-14S is the larger of the two and it can accommodate dual 140mm fans, has more heatpipes and a larger fin array. The NH-U12S on the other hand is designed for 120mm fans and it has a slightly smaller fin array, which allows it to support even more memory and motherboard combinations.
Both of the Noctua cooler are expensive for air-cooled heatsinks. According to Newegg.com, the NH-U14S and NH-U12S retail for $75.99, and $69.99 respectively.
