CONCLUSION

I always felt that SSD caching solutions should have come a long time ago since the entire concept is not really new and certainly not something hard to achieve especially when there are already quite a few SAS/SATA cards out there that support such function when coupled with an SSD. Still OCZ beat everyone to the finish line and since they are currently the only ones who offer the Synapse Cache SSD and the Hybrid drive (cache solutions) that alone is enough for us to say Bravo to them. Performance-wise I really can’t say more than what the charts have already shown to everyone. The entire system booted faster, Windows 7 Ultimate in general was far more responsive than when run just from the HDD and so were the applications we used. The only issue we were unable to test during the course of this review is whether or not the 64GB (29.8GB) version of the drive will suffice for most users, however OCZ assures us that the Dataplex program only transfers small chunks of data onto the Synapse SSD which take very little space so people shouldn't come across any issues. With this out of the way the only drawback I can think of is that the Dataplex software doesn’t allow you to use the drive for caching of secondary drives but then again It doesn’t make much sense to cache games and generally random data like images, audio and media files in general (even if it did then 32GB would certainly not be enough) so I guess that’s not so bad (still i would like to have the power to chose).
As we speak the 64GB version of the OCZ Synapse Cache SSD retails for around USD155 inside the USA and 130Euros inside the EU which is more or less the same price tag as most 64GB SSDs in the market currently. Still don’t forget that with the Synapse SSD you can enhance the performance of your HDD regardless of size so in most cases the Synapse Cache SSD is a more convenient and useful upgrade than any single 64GB SSD. For innovation and excellent performance the OCZ Synapse Cache SSD walks away with our Editor’s Choice Award, don’t tell us you’re surprised.
